: Biden to talk up Democrats’ support for abortion rights, with midterm elections now just 5 weeks away

President Joe Biden on Tuesday afternoon is slated to put a spotlight on the Democratic Party’s efforts in support of abortion rights, as he gives a speech to his administration’s task force on abortion access.

His speech, scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Eastern, is coming after Sunday marked 100 days since the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision that overturned Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 case that established a right to abortion nationwide. And it’s hitting five weeks before Election Day for the midterm contests, in which Democrats have focused on the Dobbs ruling’s aftereffects while Republicans have seized on Americans’ frustration with high inflation.

The White House on Tuesday is expected to roll out two new actions on abortion, namely new guidance for universities and new grants from the Department of Health and Human Services, according to a Politico report citing a memo from a Biden administration official. The memo also highlights GOP efforts to limit access to abortion in the wake of the high court’s ruling, including South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham’s bill that proposes banning the procedure after 15 weeks of pregnancy with certain exceptions.
