: European Parliament approves universal charger rules opposed by Apple

The European Parliament on Tuesday agreed to rules mandating all phones, tablets and cameras have to be equipped with a USB-C charger.

will force manufacturers to provide a single charger by the end of 2024, and mandate it to laptops by the spring of 2026. The parliament overwhelmingly approved the rule by a 602-to-13 vote.

Apple has a different charger for its iPhone using its Lightning cable.

The parliament in a news release said it will subsequently adopt interoperability requirements for wireless charging as that becomes more prevalent. The lawmakers estimated the move will save up to 250 million euros ($248 million) a year on unnecessary charger purchases.
